Tips for using Exemplars

Thank you for letting me quickly introduce Exemplars during your team times. I hope this resource helps guide your math instruction, analyze learners' exemplars during team times, and most importantly- teach your learners the importance of explaining and defending their math answer!

If you are planning on using Exemplars in your space, I have developed a few "tips" that are hopefully helpful for you and your teams- I tried to hyper link any handouts to easily print out, too. I would LOVE to come in and do this with you!! Please, please book me!!

Tips:

  • Introduce the learner rubric first to your learners. The whole point of exemplars is for learners to understand how to assess themselves in the different areas which will lead to quality representation of math thinking.

  • When introducing Exemplars, discuss 4 completed samples of the same Exemplar.(That example is 2nd grade) Have a discussion which work sample would be a Novice, Apprentice, Practitioner, or Expert and why.

  • . Use the explantation sheets to guide your discussion to teach how to get to an “Expert”..

  • When your learners are completing Exemplars display/handout this visual to help learners navigate through their work.

  • ​Here are some cute visuals if you want in your space. :)

  • Peer Assess in the beginning- allow your students to give a “glow/grow” on their peers’ exemplars. Example.

  • Use the differentiated exemplars based on the needs of your learners.

  • As a grade level, decide on a Common Exemplar to assess and collaborate during team time. Here is the Designer Rubric .
