Designing ELAR experiences with campus resources!

Hi FamiLEE,

I just wanted to share a few different resources that I went through that might be helpful as you design ELAR lessons and really would love to plan with you!

Reading and Writing Strategies Book by Jennifer Serravallo

Feel free to watch this quick 3 minute video about the resource. I feel confident you will want to start using it to design first steps of your reading/writing mini lessons and help guide your strategy groups! We have ordered more copies of these books - and they will be delivered to your house shortly! I would love to plan with you using this resource- please, please schedule me!

The next two resources we have on campus are very helpful to look into to create meaningful small group strategy/guided reading groups to go along with their instructional leveled book:

PROMPTING GUIDE- The Fountas & Pinnell

The Prompting Guide gives great questions to ask your small group or while you are conferring with your learners. It gives a list of sample questions- for different topics- ( Inferring, Summarizing, Making Connections, Predicting, Analyzing, etc.) for fiction and nonfiction books This would be great to have handy when you are in your small groups.

The Next Step in Guiding Reading by Jan Richardson

The Next Step in Guided Reading has an abundance of knowledge on how to get started on your guided reading. This resources breaks down most everything inside the book and has links to it, all! Check it out, here! It has LOTS of useful information!!

Leveled Books for your learners

Checking out books on your learners' Instructional and Independent level. We have a Literacy Library in the Media Center that is labeled with Fountas and Pinnell levels. Use this correlation sheet to match their DRA/I-Station Score to the correct letter level. Then check out the bags with Melinda. *You might want to look through these books to ensure it is what your learners need and something they can relate to. The chapter books would be GREAT to use when you start book clubs. Learners can and should be taking home leveled books that are on their independent level. Make sure to have a system of checking in and checking out. :) Also, Reading A-Z and your storage closet have leveled books that you can look through, choose approriately, and add to their reading book bags! Let me know if you want a partner in this to figure it out!

Let's Plan Together!

If you need a thought partner on how to find the time to pull small groups/conferring, what to do during that time, how to implement running records, have purposeful guiding activities going on, AND meaningful IRA and mini lessons. (It IS a LOT!) I would really love to sit down with you and help you wrap your brain around it all and create a schedule and figure out what is best for YOU and YOUR CLASS. We can co-teach it to kick it off, too! Just schedule a time to plan this out with me here.

I will be off campus tomorrow and next Friday learning for an IC meeting. We will be learning about Science Exemplars and Gizmos- can't wait to share with you all!

~Jacque
